How do I obtain a Firefighter, EMS or Emergency Management certification?
All Fire and Rescue certification programs are administrated and issued through the North Carolina Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM). EMS certifications are administered through the North Carolina Office of EMS (OEMS). Emergency Managment Certification Programs are administered through the North Carolina Division of Emergency Managment (NCEM).
In order to obtain a certification In North Carolina you must take all classes through the North Carolina Community College System. Classes may be taught at a Community College facility or a fire department, EMS or Rescue Squad location. All classes have a final exam but in some cases depending upon the certification a State certification exam may be required to be taken at a State Testing Facility.
Tuition is free to all personnel that are affiliated with a Fire/EMS/Rescue or Law Enforcement organization. If you are not a affiliated with an organization regular community college tuition rates apply.

Johnson County Community College located in Smithfield, North Carolina now has Firefighter 1 and 2 certificaiton classes online. These classes are approved by the North Carolina Fire & Rescue Commission and are elligible for NC Firefigher Certification.
